Life Begins at 40 (Apparently)

Life begins at 40 (apparently)

Turning 40 felt like crossing an invisible line. Suddenly my body, energy, and hormones were all speaking a new language. As a nutrition coach (and woman navigating this herself), I realised that so many of us hit this stage feeling lost, exhausted, and betrayed by our own bodies. This blog is my space to share the lessons, laughter, and science that helped me find balance again. Because nourishing yourself isn’t about restriction, it’s about respect.

As a woman in my 40s, I’ve lived through every diet trend imaginable…
No fat. 1200 calories a day. Cardio only.
If there was a “new miracle plan” in a women’s magazine between 2000 and 2015, I probably tried it.

Grapefruit diet? Tried it.
Cabbage soup diet? My kitchen (and pants) smelt like a sewer for a week.
Detox teas? I had to start scheduling toilet trips like meetings.

I used to think health was about restriction. How little I could eat and how much I could move. Rest days were for the weak (or so I thought). Now I see them as sacred. My sofa and I are basically in a committed relationship at this point.

Somewhere along the way, I learned what my body actually needs:
– Rest and recovery – because exhaustion isn’t an attractive personality trait.
– Fats – for hormones, mood, and sanity.
– Carbs – because your brain loves them, and so do I.

Thankfully, my Maltese background saved me from completely ditching carbs.
“No carbs” was never an option in a household where bread came with the pasta. Turns out, my ancestors knew something the wellness influencers didn’t – carbs fuel life…and happiness.

But let’s be real, toxic diet culture runs deep.
I’ve been through the cycle: over-exercising, skipping meals, bingeing, then starting over again on Monday. Because apparently, that’s when miracles happen.

I didn’t eat in public for years, terrified of being judged a “fat person” who didn’t deserve food. I hid under long, shapeless skirts and wore shaping underwear from the age of 14. Tight, uncomfortable, and mortifying when my friends found out. Nothing says teenage trauma quite like sweating through a family event in industrial-strength Spanx.

Now, at 40, I’m done hiding.
Perimenopause has arrived (uninvited), hormones are doing their own thing, and muscle tone occasionally ghosts me. But this time, I’m meeting my body with kindness, not punishment.

I eat carbs without guilt.
I lift weights because it makes me feel strong.
I rest when I need to.
And I wear skirts that actually move when I walk.

Because life really does begin at 40 – once you stop trying to shrink yourself.

My mission, both personally and professionally, is to help women break free from the diet rules that have kept us small and exhausted for decades. Through nourishment, movement, and mindset, I want to show that balance isn’t boring, it’s freedom.
Here’s to thriving in our 40s (and beyond), with full plates, strong bodies, and zero guilt.

Yours in stretchy pants and self-acceptance,

Maria x
